enjoy your own company

Do you also feel the need to enjoy your own company at times, but struggle to find the ways for that? Well, here’s how to begin falling in love with yourself.

“If you make friends with yourself, you’ll never be alone.” – Maxwell Maltz.

Have you ever felt the need to disconnect from the world around you, just for the sake of enjoying some ‘Me Time’?

In today’s date, as the hustle and bustle of our lives get into our nerves, we often find ourselves lost – yet we barely take time out to sit quietly, all by ourselves, to just breathe and reflect our thoughts.

Wanting to spend time alone is a very normal feeling and it is, in fact, a necessity. If I’m honest, enjoying your own company can be sublime and revealing, as well as intimidating.

I know that a lot of people would find the idea of being alone to be scary.

But once we learn to enjoy our own company, it will help us to become more tuned into our mind and body. Once we grow fond of being with ourselves, indulging in things we love to do, we would slowly learn to avoid toxic relationships and unnecessary conversations.

If I’ve to talk about myself, I found the best version of myself as I started enjoying my own company. And if you’ve been struggling to be alone (and that doesn’t mean to be lonely), then here are some wonderful ways in which you can keep yourself busy while enjoying your ‘Me Time’.

“The most powerful relationship you will ever have is the relationship with yourself.” Steve Maraboli.

Ways to enjoy your own company:

1. Find your quiet time and enjoy the silence.

And by this, I don’t mean you’ll have to sit cross-legged in some empty space and try meditating! You can find yourself some quiet time even amidst chaos, if you wish to. Go out for a walk without your phone, sit at a cafe with your favorite book, take a long drive all by yourself – and you’ll know what I mean!

Don’t worry much about finding your thoughts, they’ll find you. Just try to soak in the moment when you’re with yourself, feel the silence within and you’ll surely find a happier version of yourself.

2. Find that one thing which brings joy to your heart and make time for it.

We all have that one thing, which makes us feel happy – but often, we are too caught up with other things that we forget to figure out that ‘one thing’.

Now, as you embark on the process of falling in love with yourself, sit down quietly for a while and then write down all the things that are of your interest.

It can cooking or painting, reading or gardening – anything! Pick the one which appears on the top of your list – ‘coz that’s surely what you enjoy the most. Whatever it is, make sure that you make it your priority and actually do it on a regular basis.

“Solitude is where one discovers one is not alone.” Marty Rubin.

3. Write. Express your thoughts to yourself.

Being an avid writer myself, one of the best things that I absolutely enjoy is to write. I often sit down with my diary, expressing my deepest feelings through words – and time flies by! I know a lot of people who love to journal, and keep a note of all of their happy as well as sad moments.

But if you don’t consider yourself a writer, just buy a notebook and get in the habit of writing one – just one – sentence per day of something that happened to you, something you learned, or just something you find interesting. Writing is the best way to express yourself and it’ll help you to get closer to yourself.

4. Focus on your own story rather than worrying about everybody else’s.

We all have our own stories, and that makes us unique. As millennials, we often struggle to not get too caught up in everyone else’s lives on social media, but eventually, we end up scrolling through the feed, pondering over what others are up to.

That’s not all, we often end up feeling bad about ourselves, for not being able to do something that someone else is getting to do. But it’s important to remember that the more you concentrate on living your own life and carving your own way, the less you’ll be worrying about what everyone else is doing.

5. Simplify your surroundings.

I watched this amazing show on Netflix, ‘Tidying Up with Marie Kondo‘ where they tell you to declutter your space, which eventually helps declutter the mind.

As we reduce our belongings, we lessen our worries too. It wouldn’t be easy to start with, but once you practice living the minimalistic life, I’m sure you’ll fall in love with yourself.

Go through your mail immediately when you receive it. Clean out your closet. Get rid of the things you haven’t worn in the last 8-12 months. Only buy items that you truly want and have thought about. Avoid impulse purchases.

Be aware of your surroundings, rather than just letting things pile up around you because you’re too afraid to get rid of anything. And appreciate the peace of mind that this behavior provides.

6. Do something by yourself that you’d normally do with a friend.

Whether it’s about going to a movie or having a cup of freshly brewed coffee at your favorite cafe – try doing something all by yourself, that you normally do with your friends.

This will help you to reconnect with yourself while doing something that you love. Yeah, it might be a little uncomfortable in the beginning, but I assure you that you’ll soon start to enjoy the alone time.

7. Take a solo trip.

There can be nothing better than embracing the roads, all by yourself. Once you step out of your comfort zone, there’s no looking back.

It might seem extremely overwhelming to start with, but soon you’ll cherish the moments when you get to spend some quality time with yourself in a new environment and learn things about yourself.

You can go anywhere you want to, make friends with strangers, eat all that your heart calls for and soak in the local vibes to the fullest.

A solo trip would teach you some of the best lessons of your life, and it’ll nurture you to be a more independent human being.

All of these things will feel like big steps, but they’re worth taking. And as they say, it’s never too late to begin – so, why don’t you fall in love with yourself, all over again?
