International Women’s Day 2022 – History, Significance, and Theme
To celebrate International Women’s Day 2022, let’s all join hands and come together to #BreakTheBias and provide an equal society and privileges to women.
“Where there is a woman, there is magic.” – Ntozake Shange.
In this 21st Century, there’s literally nothing that women can’t do. From flying fighter planes to treading in space, from teaching in the classrooms to leading a nation – women have made their mark in proving what they are capable of. Yet, quite sadly, even today, women are struggling to find an equal status in society as men do.
In order to celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women across the globe, the United Nations has marked March 08 as International Women’s Day.
History, Significance & Theme of International Women’s Day 2022:
“To tell a woman everything she cannot do is to tell her what she can.” – Spanish Proverb.
History of Women’s Day:
The history of Women’s Day dates back to years – and one of the first calls for women’s rights was as early as 1848 when in an anti-slavery convention, Americans Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott gathered hundreds of people in what is said to be the first women’s rights convention in the US.
Later, on February 28, 1909, the Socialist Party of America first organized National Women’s Day in New York, and in 1910, German delegates proposed the idea of women’s day. But no date was finalized, and the protests to uphold women’s rights faded with time.
Finally, the United Nations started celebrating women’s day from the year 1975, and in 1977, the UN General Assembly proclaimed March 08 as International Women’s Day for women’s rights and world peace.
Theme of International Women’s Day 2022:
Every year, a new theme is set to celebrate the day – and this year, the focus is on providing women an equal society – hence, the theme is “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”.
The United Nations aims to emphasize the contribution of women and girls around the world who are volunteering in promoting their communities or working on climate change adaptation, mitigation, and in general working in building a more sustainable future for everyone.
The idea is to #BreakTheBias and motivate women to take a step ahead, in making their mark.
