5 Simple Tips To Declutter Your Home To Gain Mental Clarity
If you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed in your home and think it’s time for a clearout, you’re in the right place. We’re here with 5 simple tips to help declutter your home to gain some mental clarity.
It might sound silly, but you’d be surprised at what a big difference a tidy section of your home can make. We’re here to discuss a bit about how much of a difference mental clarity can have, as well as practical tips to help you start decluttering.
How Can Decluttering Help Your Mental Clarity?
Decluttering your home can make a real difference to how you feel. The environment we’re in can take its toll when we’re already not feeling our best, so when everything around us feels a bit scattered, it can be hard to ever fully unwind.
When you gradually spend some time decluttering, it can help you to feel less anxious and just have a range of mental health benefits overall, from boosting your mood to helping you to feel more focused, through to making you feel productive and relieving anxiety.
Useful Tips To Declutter Your Home
1. Start With One Small Space At A Time
Our number one tip when it comes to decluttering is to start with one small space at a time. The worst thing you can do is decide you’re going to declutter your whole house, as the likelihood is either you’ll start and make a big mess and it’ll make things worse, or you’ll struggle to find the motivation to start at all. So, instead, choose one room, and start with one small area.
This could be one of your kitchen cupboards, perhaps a drawer under your bed or the bathroom cupboard. Spend the time to do this one small space properly, then you’ll gain all the benefits of decluttering from it. Then, when you next have time, move onto another space.
This is so much more achievable than saying “I’m going to declutter my whole house” and it will make a big difference after you’ve organised a few spaces. Once you’re into the swing of things and have a few spare hours, that would be a good time to tackle one of the larger areas, like your wardrobe or cleaning cupboard.
2. Try The 12-12-12 Rule
Next up, you should try the 12-12-12 rule. The rules are simple with this, when you’re decluttering somewhere, find 12 items to throw away, 12 to donate/sell and then 12 that you return to their proper home. You can then repeat as much as you want.
Depending on the area you’re decluttering you could reduce or increase the number, but it just helps to give you some accountability in terms of how many things you should be decluttering if you find it difficult to convince yourself to do it.
You’ll get rid of anything you really don’t need, make some money off the things you sell and then you can put your 12 items to keep back in their usual place and everything will be much more organised.
3. Create A Sell Pile
We’ve briefly touched on it already, however we’d recommend that you create a sell pile when you’re decluttering. Assign a space in your home where you will keep these items, like a box in the corner of one of your rooms, then when you’re decluttering and find something you no longer need or use, but could be sold, put it in there.
Then, when you have some free time, spend time putting your items on local marketplaces or clothes reselling platforms like Depop or Vinted. You’ll soon see that items you don’t want or need are exactly what someone else is looking for and you can make quite a bit of money from it!
This will incentivise you to have a proper clear out, then if you can’t sell anything after a while, you can simply donate it.
4. Get Some Storage Solutions
Another good tip is to get some storage solutions to help everything stay organised. Having a clear out is all well and good until you put everything back into its place and realise it still feels quite cluttered. In this case, you might just need some help in terms of the storage solutions.
Things like drawer dividers for your accessories and jewellery, large plastic tubs to store your off-season clothes like festival outfits, shelving for your beauty products or storage cubes for shoes can make a big difference to how your home feels.
We’d recommend starting out by decluttering, then you’ll be able to easily identify what you need, rather than spending lots of money on things you think you need when really you just need to declutter!
5. Focus On Clearing Surfaces
If you’re really not sure where to start, our advice would be to focus on clearing any surfaces in your home. Often it’s messy surfaces that can make things feel most untidy, so take the room that you spend most time in, and focus on removing anything from the surfaces that is just clutter and don’t need to be there. If you can move some things into cupboards to clear the space, then make sure to do it.
When you walk into a room and it feels clear, even if the cupboards are messy, it will change your mindset. Then, when you have time, start going through the cupboards too, to help declutter even more.
A quick sweep of the sides in one of your rooms could take anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour depending on what you’re working with, however it will certainly be worth it for how much of a big difference it can make.
