How to Create a Vision Board That Truly Aligns with Your Goals
Learn how to create a vision board in 2025 to manifest your goals and dreams to turn your aspirations into reality!
Can you believe that it’s already the end of January, and we’re about to step into the second month of 2025? To me, it feels surreal and exciting to see how time is passing in the blink of an eye!
I’m sure many of you have already created a vision board for 2025, hoping to manifest all of it by the end of the year, while others might be struggling with the thought of how to do it and align everything perfectly. Trust me when I say this, making a vision board actually helps in creating a visual representation of your goals, reminding you to put in your best efforts every single day.
Before we go into the details of how to make a vision board and how exactly it can impact us, let’s first understand what a vision board is.
What is a vision board?
A vision board is made with a collection of photos, doodles or drawings, affirmation quotes, and highlights that are arranged together to represent our goals and ambitions. Every person will have a unique vision board, aligning with their dreams and goals and representing how they visualize their best life.
It’s more of a roadmap leading you to your dreams.
That’s why a vision board is also called a dream board. It can be a physical one or a digital one, depending on what’s more convenient for you to create. The idea is to keep it handy so that you can look at it often, reminding yourself of the things you wish to achieve and motivating yourself to work hard for them.
Usually, people create annual vision boards, compiling smaller goals that can be achieved within a year, but you can also create a vision board for long-term goals, like a five-year plan or more.
Do vision boards work?
Before I created my first vision board a couple of years ago, I had the same question! So if you’re skeptical about how a vision board can actually help you achieve your goals, I get it.
Honestly, it’s all about the law of attraction.
As Buddha said, “What you think, you become. What you feel, you attract. What you imagine, you create.” The idea behind creating a vision board is similar. When you put all your thoughts together and turn them into a visual representation of your goals, you eventually put in more effort toward achieving them.
It’s like setting a reminder for yourself and taking small steps every day to fulfill your dreams.
There’s no magic involved – it all depends on your hard work and commitment. If you think that just creating a vision board is enough, let me tell you that it isn’t. In fact, making a vision board is just the beginning. You’ll have to stay motivated and give your 100% to turn all your dreams into reality.
How exactly can a vision board create an impact on us?
Well, not only will the vision board help you in aligning your goals, but it’ll impact you in several other ways.
1. Helps in self-reflection
Creating a vision board will encourage you to think about the things you truly wish to achieve in the future. When you ask yourself questions about how you want to see yourself in the future, you will also indulge in self-reflection and understand how far you’ve come. A vision board will definitely add more clarity to your life, making you more aware of what you want to achieve and how.
2. Helps in creating self-awareness
Let me explain this with an example. Suppose you joined a company as a fresher a couple of months ago, and you’ve been working very hard. You’ve also received appreciation for your work. Now, if you wish to become a manager by the end of the year—that isn’t possible! There are certain parameters, and no matter how hard you work, you’ll need some job experience to step up to the manager’s position.
Similarly, while creating a vision board, you’ll have to be aware of where you are right now and how much you think you can achieve by the end of the time period you’re setting. Having irrelevant goals and aspirations will only make things difficult for you! Thus, while creating a vision board, you’ll have to be self-aware and understand your strengths and weaknesses.
3. Helps in reducing stress
Achieving goals requires hard work and often involves learning new things, gaining new experiences, and stepping out of your comfort zone. It can get stressful at times, which is why people often give up on their goals. Having a vision board will keep reminding you of what you want to achieve, helping you embrace things with an open mind and feel less stressed when things don’t work out—because, in the end, you know you’ll take small steps and make it happen.
How to create a vision board?
Creating a vision board might seem very easy, but it actually needs a lot of patience, creativity, and motivation. Also, as I had mentioned earlier, you can either make a physical vision board, or a digital one – depending on what is more convenient for you.
Here is a step-by-step guide about how to create a vision board:
1. Write down your goals for the year
This is the first, and the most crucial step of creating a vision board. Sit down, close your eyes for a few minutes until you feel calm from within, and then start jotting down the things that you wish to achieve this year (or the period for which you want to create the vision board).
You can start with simple things, like:
- What would you like to learn this year?
- What is your career goal for the year?
- How would you like to define happiness this year?
- What are your relationship goals for this year?
- How healthy do you wish to be this year?
- Where do you plan to travel this year?
- Is there something that has been on your bucketlist?
- What are your financial goals for this year?
These are just a few ideas, but there are a lot more questions that you can ask to yourself. And make sure that you write down the answers also because that’ll help you while you finally collate everything on your board.
2. Pause, and think of all the answers for a bit
Once you have all the answers in front of you, it might feel a bit overwhelming – hence, it’s always a good idea to pause for a bit, and then highlight the goals that you absolutely want to achieve within a given period. Remember that there’s no point in keeping 100 goals because fulfilling all might not be humanely possible.
It’s better to keep around 8 to 10 shorter goals, with 2 or 3 big goals, that you can achieve in a year.
Now, can you picture yourself living that life? – Because in the next step, you’ll be bringing that picture out on your vision board!
3. Get creative while making your vision board
Physical vision board
If you plan to make a physical vision board, you’ll need a few supplies to start with.
- 1 chart paper or a pinboard
- Glue stick and cello tape or board pins
- Cutouts of images related to your dreams/ goals, doodle pens, stickers, etc.
For example, if you wish to buy a house this year, add a photo of the house you’re dreaming of. Or maybe you want to travel abroad? Then you can put images of the destination that’s on your bucketlist. Stick those image cutouts on the chart paper or the pinboard, along with some motivational quotes that you think will inspire you. You can also decorate it, making your vision board look aesthetic.
Digital vision board
I think making a digital version is easier, and it’s something that suits me best. And you don’t need any supplies for this! You can create a digital vision board on Canva (or any other similar tool).
Download photos that align with your goals, and choose a layout on Canva. Now, start adding the photos to the layout, write your goals, or make some doodles. You can also add stickers if you wish to. And that’s it.
Let me tell you, there’s no right or wrong way of creating a vision board. You just need to be clear of your goals, and have fun while creating the board.
Your vision board should look grand, because Oprah Winfrey once said, “It’s important to create the highest, grandest vision possible for your life because you become what you believe.”
Where to place your vision board?
Now that you’ve created your vision board, the next important step is to find a perfect place for the vision board. It’s important to keep your vision board in a spot where you can see it every single day.
If you’re creating a digital vision board (like I did), then you can simply make it your laptop/ mobile wallpaper so that every time you turn on the screen, it’s the fist thing you’ll see!
In case you’re making a physical one, you can keep it around your work desk, or in the kitchen, or next to your mirror, so that you’re constantly reminded of your goals.
And now comes the most important part – turning your vision into action!
If you think you can achieve it all in a day, that’s just not feasible! What I would suggest is to take small steps every day and track your weekly goals. Slowly, you’ll see that you’re advancing toward your goals.
For example, I want to write a book this year, and I know I can’t just wake up tomorrow with the whole draft ready! So, I’ve decided that I’ll write 500 words every day and I haven’t set any specific topics, I’m just doing free writing. I plan to keep doing this for the next couple of months. Then, starting in April, I’ll give myself a theme and write around 1,500 words every day. This way, by September, I feel like I’ll have a rough draft that I can then start working on.
Alongside this, I also want to write for some travel publications, so I’m working on improving my pitches.
It’s important to be sure of your dreams and believe in them. Unless you truly believe in your goals, you won’t be able to put in your best efforts. You should know why you want to achieve your goals and what value they’ll add to your life. And slowly, as you work on yourself, the magic will really start happening!
