Wondering what are the signs of emotional maturity? Here are the 10 best ones that would help you understand how emotionally mature you are!

Let’s face the truth. Apart from focusing on our physical and mental wellbeing, it is also important that we acknowledge our emotional wellbeing as well.

When we talk about emotional maturity, we essentially refer to the ability to understand, reflect, nurture and manage our emotions.

Stuck in the chaos of life, we often struggle to find an emotional balance – and that tends to take a toll on our work, relationships, and health.

When we talk about an ‘Emotionally Mature’ person, we mean someone who can deal with their emotions at any given circumstance.

There are certain characteristic features by which you can define emotional maturity – such as, the urge to take responsibilities knowing the difficulties, being able to embrace failures and learning from the mistakes, being open to criticisms without breaking down, showing empathy towards others, etc.

10 prominent signs of emotional maturity:

1. You know your faults and don’t hesitate to accept them.

We all have our fair share of strengths and weaknesses. While it’s easy to acknowledge and appreciate our strengths, it takes a lot of courage to admit our weaker points.

Emotionally mature people are aware that nobody in this world is perfect, and they never hesitate to accept their flaws and shortcomings.

They are even comfortable talking about their least desirable traits, without worrying about any awkward or unpleasant situation that might arise.

Apart from that, if you are emotionally stable and mature enough, you’d know how to work on your failures, while learning lessons from them.

Initially, it might be tough to face your weaknesses, but if you write them down, appreciate the fact that they are your characters, and deal with them carefully in your daily life, you’d soon learn how to live with them, and eventually transform them into your strengths.

2. You are flexible.

We all tend to plan a lot in life and hope that things will go as per our plans.

Whether it’s about a trip that you’ve been waiting for, or a dinner date with your partner, or maybe a project you’re handling – you know you’ve plans that can be worked on.

But what you don’t know is that there might be sudden unavoidable issues that can cause a hindrance to your plan, making you choose an alternative.

That’s when your mental stability gets tested!

If you can be calm in stressful situations, think of a Plan B and put your efforts into achieving the goal rather than worrying about the means – that’ll surely prove the fact that you are emotionally mature.

Moving on in life, without being affected by the bumps on the way is a sign of growing up in the most beautiful manner.

3. You have learnt to let go.

The more we hold on, the more pain it will cause us. This is the mere truth of life which we often fail to soak in.

Getting immensely attached to something or someone might give us temporary pleasure or happiness, but there would be a point where we’ll have to let loose.

Letting go demands a lot of courage and it’s an obvious sign of maturity.

Choose to pick your battles wisely, and let go of everything else that probably won’t even matter in the long run.

If someone says something bad to you, or hurts you – don’t hold on to those grudges.

Be compassionate towards them and make sure that you purposely don’t cause pain to anyone.

Forgive people, spread love, count your blessings, and you’ll see how beautiful the world is.

4. You realize that not everything is black & white.

While most people would argue for the right or the wrong, being emotionally mature would help you to know that there’s something called grey.

You’ll realize that even if others don’t agree with you, they still can have a point that holds enough logic for them.

You learn to respect others’ opinions, even when they aren’t anywhere close to what your opinions are.

It’s not always about an argument to prove who is right; it’s about wanting to be informed by different points of view to further clarify your own thoughts, or recognizing that perhaps your ideas may even be wrong.

5. You stop chasing for perfection.

Perfection is a very relative term, and when you evolve as a person, you realize that nothing in this world is perfect.

You accept the imperfections and put in your best efforts, aiming to improve yourself, every single day.

A person stops growing when he/she considers himself/herself to be perfect – and it’s a sign of emotional maturity to acknowledge the fact that it’s more important to be unique than perfect.

As you’ll stop looking for perfection in yourself and others, you’ll be at a more peaceful headspace, being able to channelize your energy towards self-discovery and self-motivation.

Once you stop setting unrealistic standards and focus on being the best that you can be, the chase for perfection will automatically disappear.

6. You learn to look beyond ‘the first impression’.

There’s a popular proverb – “The first impression is the last impression.”

On today’s date, when the world is moving faster than ever, we tend to make opinions about another person, right after one interaction.

But when you nurture your emotional quotient, you tend to realize that a person can never really be judged by the first meet, and one needs to spend enough time to know and completely understand another person.

In other words, you can only connect with another person when you have an open mind – free of any judgements or opinions.

In the first meeting, one might not give you a ‘good vibe’, but maybe, when you get to know them more, you’ll tend to fall in love with them.

As an emotionally mature individual, you would know that it’s never right to judge a book by its cover, and you’ll take your time to discover the other person’s real self.

7. You know the meaning of having a purpose in life.

It is immensely important to have a sense of purpose in life that would make living much more meaningful, and help you to steer through the odds.

There are times when life surprises us with unpleasant events – diseases, accidents, failures, etc – and sometimes, even after trying hard and putting your best, you might not achieve what you’ve been aiming for.

Emotional maturity will help you to survive through all those times, as you’d realize that ‘this too shall pass’.

Having a purpose in life, along with a set of values & principles, will let you cultivate stability and make decisions based on your beliefs.

You’d think before acting, without being impulsive. Emotional turmoil often forces us to make wrong decisions as we shift from our values in life.

8. You know how to appreciate the little things in life.

Your emotional quotient would help you to find little joys in everyday life. You’d count your blessings and be grateful for all that you have.

Whether it’s waking up to a beautiful sun soaked morning, a walk with your partner, a delightful meal or a great day at work – you’d know that all these moments are worth enjoying.

Being emotionally mature would help you to pause and appreciate every single moment of life, knowing that they aren’t permanent.

At the end of each day, take out at least 5 minutes and write about the good things that happened throughout the day.

Over time, you’d realize that looking back at these little joys would fetch you a sense of innate happiness, and you’ll slowly learn to look beyond the negatives in life, as you cherish all the good things that come your way!

9. You’re not scared of being alone.

It’s important to know the difference between being alone & being lonely. You can be amongst a group of people and feel lonely, if there’s none you can mentally connect with.

On the other hand, you can be alone and happy if you learn to enjoy your own company

When you choose to go on a solo trip or spend a weekend all by yourself – it shows that you are emotionally healthy and not dependent on others for your happiness.

You learn to appreciate solitude while enjoying time with yourself, and listen more to your inner voice.

Amidst the humdrum of our daily lives, it’s essential to find some ‘Me Time’ and nurture your emotional wellbeing.

10. You don’t blame others for your failure.

“Oh I couldn’t finish my work because someone called me!”

“This food isn’t cooked well because the meat wasn’t good!”

“I got late because of him!”

These are just examples to show that it’s a common human tendency to put the blame on others in order to justify our failures!

This is a mere way to uphold our self-esteem and boost our ego – but emotionally mature individuals rarely tend to do this.

They are well aware of their mistakes and they never put the baggage of their failures on others.

At some point in life, we all need to take responsibility for our own actions, and once you do so, know that you’re blooming as an emotionally mature person.

Probably you could relate to some of these signs, or maybe not. But that doesn’t stop you from honing your emotional strength.

Regardless of where you are in your journey, remember we’re all imperfect and trying to rectify ourselves, every single day!

If you could relate to any of these signs, let us know in the comments below. Take control of your emotions and be happy in all that you choose to do.
